Introduction to the R Statistical System

Abstract

R is the lingua franca of data analysis and graphics.  In this short course we will learn the fundamentals of the language and immediately use it for the statistical analysis of data.  We will graph both the data and the results of the analyses.

 We will work with the basic statistical tools (regression, analysis of variance, and contingency tables), and some more specialized tools used in the pharmaceutical industry (nonlinear mixed models, survival analysis, simulations, non-parametric analysis, time and dates functions).  We will also look at the Rcmdr menu system, RExcel integration of R with Excel, and the design of R packages.

Dr. Heiberger is Professor of Statistics at Temple University and an author of several books on statistical computing, including one on using R and Excel.

Registration will be capped at 50. Tickets will be sold first-come first-serve, so register early! Full refunds will be given on request before Wednesday November 21.

 Special Instructions

1. Before you sign up, note these requirements:

   a. You must have a basic knowledge of confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear regression, and categorical data analysis at the level of a Masters degree in statistics or other quantitative field.

   b. You must have prior experience with a statistical computing system such as SAS or SPSS.

   c. You must have a laptop computer that you will bring to the short course. Windows-based computers are recommended. No computer workstations will be provided at the event.

   d. Before you arrive, you must have downloaded and installed the latest version of R (2.15.1) at 

                   http://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/

2. When you arrive at UMDNJ, park in the gravel overflow lot behind Lots A and B. DO NOT PARK IN THE ASPHALT PARKING LOTS!! After you park, walk through Lot B, and cross Hoes Lane West. Then walk through Lot C to the School of Public Health, which is a 3-story mostly glass building. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor. The course will take place in room 3AB.
